Brown (RAL 8025) is the classic colour for food waste bins. What matters most for food waste collection is the material: the Citybac® is made of HDPE, which is insensitive to fruit acids and easy to rinse out after emptying. Food waste is dense, which is why weight matters: a filling weight of up to 48 kg is permitted.

Brown – what belongs in the food waste bin: brown bins are designated for food waste in many places: fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds with filter, tea bags, eggshells, spoiled food without packaging, and small quantities of garden waste such as grass cuttings, leaves and shrub trimmings. Plastics must never go inside, not even so-called compostable bio-bags – many fermentation and composting plants cannot process them. Paper bags or newspaper have proven effective as a liner, along with a lid that is always kept closed and a shaded location, to limit odour and flies in summer. Colour allocation is regulated locally and may vary; in some districts the food waste bin is green.
