Wheelie bin lid broken? How to replace it yourself

The short answer

A broken or warped lid is no reason to buy a new bin: on SULO wheelie bins the lid is held in place by just two hinge pins and can be replaced in around five minutes – with no special tools. A replacement lid costs a fraction of the price of a new bin.

Which lid fits my bin?

All lids are available not only in grey but also in blue, brown, yellow, green, orange, red and white – the colour variants are linked on the respective product page. Before ordering, check the lettering on your bin: SULO lids do not fit Weber bins; for those, the Weber hinge pins will help with loose lids.

How to replace the lid – step by step

1. Remove the old pins: The two hinge pins sit on the left and right in the comb of the bin. They can be driven out sideways with a hammer and a pin punch (or a suitable screwdriver).
2. Swap the lid: Take off the old lid and fit the new lid with its hinge eyes into the comb.
3. Drive in new pins: Drive in fresh hinge pins (MGB 60–120) or pins for the Citybac 240 lid – old pins are often worn and should be replaced at the same time.

When is replacing the lid worthwhile?

Lids age faster than the bin body: UV light makes the plastic brittle, and eventually the lid cracks at the hinge or no longer closes tightly. If the body is intact, a replacement lid is the most economical and sustainable solution. Only when the wheel axle or comb is damaged is it worth considering a new bin.
