The short answer
A bin bag holder keeps the bag taut at the top edge so that it does not slip down as you fill it. It is fitted without tools. The only important thing is knowing the right type: for wheelie bins it is a rectangular wire frame with two clamps – the bag is pulled over the frame, then the clamps are hooked onto the hinge bar. For the round steel bins of the SME range it is a spring ring that you squeeze together at the ends and fit inside. And the size must match the bin: the holders are not adjustable.
What the bag holder is for
Without a holder, the bag slides down as you fill it. Rubbish then ends up between the bag and the bin wall, the inside of the bin gets dirty, and when you take the bag out half the contents stay stuck. With a holder, the bag stays open, the edges disappear under the frame and emptying is done in one go.
This pays off wherever the bag is removed by hand: at work, in hallways and stairwells, in the workshop, at collection points and in kitchens. A side benefit: the bin stays clean and needs rinsing out less often.
Two types – do not mix them up
Rectangular wire frame for wheelie bins. A continuous hoop of galvanised steel wire in the shape of the bin opening, with two clamps fitted on one side. The frame rests on the inside of the rim, and the clamps grip the lid's hinge bar at the back. We stock this type for all common bin sizes.
Round spring ring for steel bins. An open ring of steel wire whose ends can be squeezed together. It is placed inside the round bin and presses the bag against the wall by its spring force. Only for the SME range in 25, 35 and 50 litres; it does not fit plastic bins.
Which size fits which bin
What matters is the nominal volume of the bin, not the brand of the bag:

Fitting the wire frame: three simple steps
- Pull the bag over the frame. Lay the frame flat outside the bin and pull the bin bag over it from above, so that the mouth of the bag wraps over the wire all the way round. The two clamps stay free.
- Lower the frame and bag into the bin. Let the bag hang down into the bin and position the frame so that the side with the clamps faces the back – where the lid is hinged.
- Hook on the clamps. Press the two clamps down onto the hinge bar from above until they click into place. Then lower the front of the frame until it rests on the bin rim all the way round.
Finally, check: the lid must close without resistance, and the bag must not bulge out anywhere between the frame and the rim.
Fitting the spring ring in a steel bin
With the round SME version, the order is reversed: first put the bag in the bin and fold the opening outwards over the rim. Then gently squeeze the two open ends of the ring together with both hands, guide the ring in from above and let go. It springs open and presses the bag against the wall. It takes little force; overstretching the ring permanently robs it of its tension.
Removing it again
With the wire frame, lift the front of the frame and pull the clamps upwards off the hinge bar. You can usually take the full bag out without removing the frame completely: lift the frame, pull the bag out from underneath, pull a new bag over.
With the spring ring, squeeze the ends together again and lift it out. If it sticks because dirt has built up between the ring and the wall, first press it inwards at one point with the flat of your hand. Force and tools are not needed and only bend the metal.
Which bin bag to use
The bag must reach the bottom and still fold easily over the frame or over the rim. As a rule of thumb, choose a bag whose nominal volume equals or slightly exceeds that of the bin; a bag that is too small will slip despite the holder. Thickness matters too: for general waste and commercial waste, thicker bags make sense; for paper, thin ones are enough. You will find suitable accessories under bin accessories.
Bag holder or Vario insert? Two different things
The two are often confused, but they do different jobs:
- The bag holder holds a bag in place in the bin. The bin still collects a single type of waste.
- The Vario insert is a separate plastic container that hangs in the top of the bin. It lets you collect two waste streams in one bin, for example general waste at the bottom and organic waste or paper in the insert. It is available square in 35, 60 and 80 litres and round in 40 litres. The 80-litre insert requires a square bin body of 240 litres or more.
Taking the Vario insert out again
The insert hangs on the bin rim by its surrounding collar; it is not locked in place. To take it out, grip it on two opposite sides and pull it straight up. If it is stuck, this is almost always due to suction or dirt in the gap: tilt it slightly at one corner to let air in, then lift it. Never jerk it at one corner, as the collar can break.
Common mistakes
- Wrong type ordered. The wire frame does not fit round steel bins, and the spring ring does not fit wheelie bins.
- Wrong size. The bag holder must match the bin, not the bag.
- Clamps fitted at the front. They belong on the hinge side, otherwise the frame will not hold and the lid presses against it.
- Bag under the frame instead of over it. Then nothing is held. With the frame, the bag always goes over the wire first.
- Metal overstretched. A bent frame no longer lies flat, and an overstretched spring ring no longer holds. Both cost little, so replacing them is worthwhile.
Frequently asked questions
Does the frame fit every bin of this size? It fits the common wheelie bins to EN 840, because the opening dimensions and the hinge bar are standardised. For special shapes and very old bins, measure the opening first.
Does the bag holder get in the way when the bin lorry empties the bin? Yes, it is not designed for that. When the bin is tipped over the discharge edge, it would fall out too. The bag holder is intended for bins whose bag is removed by hand.
Does galvanised steel rust in the bin? The galvanising withstands moisture for a long time. It only becomes critical when the coating is damaged by bending or knocking – one more reason not to use tools. How to keep containers clean gently is explained in the guide cleaning canisters and drums.
Can I use a bag holder and a Vario insert together? Yes, as long as the lid still closes: the frame with the bag in the main compartment, the insert for the second waste stream.
