Which wheelie bin size do I need?

The short answer

For a household of 1–2 people, the 60 litre bin is usually enough; the classic choice for families is the 120 litre bin, blocks of flats opt for the 240 litre bin – and from several residential units upwards or in commercial settings, the large containers with 660 or 1,100 litres pay off. All sizes comply with the DIN EN 840 standard and are compatible with the usual municipal bin lifts.

How to determine the right size

Collection cycle: If your bin is only emptied every four weeks, you need more volume than with fortnightly collection – as a rough guide, allow 10–15 litres of residual waste per person per week. Space: 60 and 80 litre bins have the same footprint; the step up to 120 litres costs only a few centimetres. From 240 litres the bin becomes noticeably deeper, and the 4-wheeled containers need a paved, level standing area. Local authority requirements: Many waste disposal authorities stipulate a minimum volume per household – it is worth checking your local waste regulations before buying.
